Rediscovering the Mystery of Communion – Part 1
Welcome back, my awesome Allies.
One of the most mysterious practices in Christianity is the doctrine of Communion—the act of taking the bread and wine as Jesus Christ instructed. For centuries, this simple yet profound ritual has also been a significant source of division among Christians. Much of this division arises from a misunderstanding of what Communion truly represents.
In this series, I will explore and clarify the true meaning of Communion, shedding light on the profound mystery behind this sacred practice. In particular, we will uncover how the bread—symbolising the body of Christ—operates in the life of the believer:
- how the Bread brings healing.
- how the Bread detoxifies our bodies,
- how the Bread swallows our infirmities, and
- how the Bread performs spiritual phagocytosis, destroying afflictions at their root.
Jesus Claimed Absolute Authority
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Since the beginning of the world, He remains the only one who could boldly declare, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (Matthew 28:18). If Jesus truly holds absolute power, then the enemy is rendered powerless. Unable to operate with real authority, the enemy relies on his last remaining weapons—lies, intimidation, and deception—against the children of God.
Jesus first instituted this sacred meal in Mark 14:22–24 (NIV):
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.
The Role of Communion Bread
The bread used in Communion represents the body of Christ. It holds profound significance for the growth, development, welfare, and even spiritual warfare of the believer. In a world marked by pain, brokenness, and constant battles, the importance of this sacred legacy Jesus left us cannot be overstated.
In this discussion, however, I want to focus specifically on the role of the Communion bread.
1.The bread brings healing
The bread we receive in Communion carries with it the power to bring physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing. Jesus declared in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life.” And in Matthew 15:26, He affirms that healing is the children’s bread.
Together, these truths reveal that Jesus Himself—symbolised by the bread—brings healing to those who partake in faith.
There are countless testimonies about people receiving their healing simply by taking Communion. This healing does not come by just casually eating the bread. It occurs when we approach this sacred doctrine with faith and trust in God.
2. The Bread Detoxifies Our Bodies
The Bible declares,
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots” (Isaiah 11:1).
In this prophecy, Isaiah is referring to Jesus; therefore, Jesus is symbolically described as the Rod. We see this imagery reflected in the book of Exodus. When God sent Moses to Egypt to deliver Israel from captivity, Moses doubted that Pharaoh—and even the Israelites—would believe him. God responded by asking, “What is that in your hand?” Moses answered, “A rod.” (Exodus 4:2). This rod in Moses’ hand served as a typology of Christ—a physical symbol pointing to a spiritual reality.
3. The Bread Swallows Our Infirmities
When Moses confronted Pharaoh, he cast down his rod, and it became a serpent. Pharaoh’s magicians attempted to replicate the miracle by casting down their rods, which also turned into serpents. But then something remarkable happened: the serpent from Moses’ rod swallowed all the serpents of the magicians.
Afterwards, Moses picked it up by the tail, and it returned to a rod. Yet, despite swallowing the other serpents, the rod did not increase in size or weight. The incident was a supernatural event—an undeniable breach of natural law that pointed to a more profound spiritual truth.
4. The Bread Performs Spiritual Phagocytosis
Phagocytosis is the process by which specialised immune cells (phagocytes) swallow, digest, and eliminate harmful pathogens, infected cells, or debris.
In essence, what happened in Exodus was this: the rod—symbolic of Jesus—swallowed the rods of the magicians, digested them, assimilated them, and spiritually expelled the waste. Because of this divine process, the rod’s size and weight remained unchanged. This supernatural event illustrates what the body of Jesus accomplishes in us when we receive Communion.
Remember, Scripture presents Jesus as the Rod (Isaiah 11:1). Just as Moses’ rod consumed everything that opposed it, the body of Jesus—received through the bread of Communion—enters our being and swallows every sickness, disease, infirmity, and emotional or spiritual affliction. After the body of Jesus swallows these afflictions, it digests, assimilates, and spiritually expels their influence, leaving us whole and free from demonic oppression.
Conclusion
The body of Jesus is the only “medicine” with no side effects. Take His body in faith—and receive healing in the mighty name of Jesus! In my next blog, I will discuss how the bread of Communion opens spiritual sight, enabling believers to see with divine clarity.
