A Journey along the highway

Welcome back, my Fidus Achates!

Life is like a journey along the highway, and like a journey on every highway, you meet things that may be relevant or irrelevant to your trip. Overlooking or taking any of these things for granted can result in a fatal accident, which could consequently result in death. Continue reading as I unfold this mystery.

Potholes

One of the commonest things you are likely to encounter while you travel on the highway is potholes. Potholes occur as a result of erosion or excessive use of the road, the highway authority does not intentionally create them. Like potholes, some things happen in life which you don’t orchestrate. You don’t necessarily wish or pray for them, but they simply happen.

Bad Actors

In some African countries, particularly Ghana, there are people who make a living by fixing potholes. Some of these people during the day pose like volunteers fixing potholes. They usually fill the potholes with sand they had fetched in a wheelbarrow. This seeming patriotic gesture often attracts gifts and remunerations from drivers and passersby.

Surprisingly, some of them return at night to remove the sand they had used to patch the potholes. As a result, you see them at the same spot filling the same potholes day after day. This is a classical example of the work of the enemy in your life. He pretends to be solving problems for you, but in the actual fact, he created them.

Generally, potholes slow you down. No matter the type of car you are using and how fast you desperately want to go, if you approach bad potholes, you necessarily need  to slow down.

Many people have slackened in life because they encountered one pothole or the other.  Several others have been brought to a stop because they met a bad pothole. One thing you need to do when you encounter a pothole is yes, to slow down, but drive skilfully around it and make sure it doesn’t stop you.

Speed Ramps

Speed ramps, unlike potholes, are made deliberately by the highway authority. They serve as a mechanism to slow you down and prevent you from over-speeding which could cause an incident or accident. Like speed ramps, God often allows some things your way to ensure that you stay in divine timing.  This is because God will never do anything outside of His time, but in His time, He makes all things beautiful (Ecclesiastes 11:3).

Blame Games

Sadly, many Christians are inclined to blame every seemingly negative occurrence in their lives on the devil. However, the devil may not have a hand in these situations. Jesus said in John 12:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” We usually blame the grain falling on the ground and its dying on the devil, yet in the actual fact, It might be God who wants to bring multiplication.

Don’t be in a harry to come up

God, as part of slowing you down, could hide you. While God is hiding you, you may undergo all kinds of delays and even denials. You need to understand that, God will not launch you into the public, unless He prepares you in private. A typical example is the case of David. As the last born among eight boys, he was the one tending sheep. David could have been bitter, but he chose to be better. He decided to develop himself. He singlehandedly learnt how to play the harp. He also underwent military training from God. David confirms this Psalm 144:1

Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle

When the right time came, God brought him from the bush to kill Goliath and eventually become the king of Israel.

Curves

As you continue the journey along the highway, you may not be able to see your destination because of curves. Sometimes, God through His word shows you a glimpse of the future but doesn’t show you the outline and events that will unfold until it happens. God requires a relationship with you, and He expects you to come to Him daily for the next cause of action. Taking the children of Israel as an example, God showed them the promised land without giving them a map to the place. They had to go to Him daily for directions and guidance. Even though you may not be given the map to your future, you simply need to trust that God will give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11). We may not know the future, but we surely know the One who knows the future.  You simply have to rest in His promises and truth Him. Many people are anxious about life and have fear of the unknown. “But the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits (Daniel 11:32).”

Mountains and Valleys

In life(the journey along the highway), you climb mountains and descend valleys. The enemy puts mountains your way to prevent you from reaching your destination. Valleys are meant to discourage you from completing your journey, but Isaiah 40:4 reads “Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low”. When constructing a road, arguably, one of the most critical decisions to make is when the team encounters a mountain. They often have to decide whether to go around the mountain or traverse through it. Usually, going around is the easiest way out, but could be cost intensive. Obviously, traversing through the mountain may be difficult, but is usually the best thing to do.

The sure way to conquer every mountain and valley is to face it head-on. Every mountain you run away from today will definitely catch up with you tomorrow. If we observe the armour outlined by apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:11-18, for a typical Christian militant, there’s nothing covering the back. That is the reason why retreaters fail. In your quest to save your life by running, you rather lose it, because, the enemy will shoot at your back.

Conclusion

Life in this world is likened to a journey along the highway, you encounter things that will affect your journey one way or the other. Both potholes and speed ramps are meant to slow you down, however, speed ramps are made deliberately by the highway authority, while potholes are caused by erosion, excessive use of the road or bad actors. You also encounter curves which are meant to obscure your view. Lastly, mountains and valleys are meant to slow you down and discourage you. In all of these, you need to soldier on!
