King Solomon’s wealth: The Mystery Behind the wealth of King Solomon
Welcome back my faithful Compadres!
Solomon, according to the Bible, was the wisest and the wealthiest earthly king that ever lived, or will ever live. He was incredibly renowned because of his indescribable health and divine wisdom which accorded him the ability to unravel daunting mysteries. Even though his father, David, was known as “the man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14)”, he couldn’t live to half the wealth of Solomon. He never fought a single battle but enjoyed total peace and comfort on every side. What was the secret behind the breathtaking wealth of Solomon? Come with me as I unfold this mystery.
The source of Solomon’s initial wisdom?
The fame of King Solomon began after his selfless request for wisdom. The story of Solomon has been partially told over the centuries. The question is, what motivated this young king to ask for wisdom from God? Arguably, it requires wisdom for someone to ask for wisdom and not material things. In order words, before Solomon could ask for wisdom, he was already wise to some extent. What then is the source of Solomon’s initial wisdom? Solomon himself answered this question in Proverbs 4:1-9:
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. For I too was a son to my father, still tender, and cherished by my mother. Then he taught me, and he said to me, “Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.”
A living testament to Scriptural truth
It is evident from this text that Solomon’s inclination to ask for wisdom was a result of the heartfelt counsel given to him by his father. it was not surprising that later in his life he said, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). He was a living testament to this Scriptural truth. Wisdom is said to be the application of knowledge. King David taught Solomon the essence and implication of getting wisdom, therefore, Solomon’s request for wisdom was in fulfilment of the passionate appeal made to him by his father.
The Bible is God’s Word in print
The Bible is a covenant book of principles, it is God’s Word in print. The Bible says that God has exalted His Word above His name (Psalm 138:2). It is imperative, however, to note that God doesn’t just do anything. Whatever He does is in the fulfilment of Scripture. This is where the actual story began. King David desired to build a house for God, but was instructed by God to pass that task to his son, Solomon. Therefore, he prepared all the materials needed to build a mega temple and left it for Solomon to build. After building the temple, Solomon offered a thousand plus burnt offering unto the Lord (1 Kings 3:4). As it always pleases the Lord when we offer Him sacrifices from our hearts, He was pleased about Solomon’s sacrifice, hence, instructed him to ask for whatever he wanted.
An understanding heart to govern your people
1 Kings 3:8-9 (NIV) reads, “Your servant is here among the people You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So, give Your servant a discerning heart to govern Your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?”. Solomon’s request would have been an ordinary request; however, the key was that he said, “to govern Your people”. It is true that he asked for a discerning heart (wisdom), but what was his motive? To govern the people of God, which meant he was seeking first the Kingdom of God. However, Mathew 6:33 says, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Therefore, God was obliged to give him “all these things”. This is the secret to get prayers answered.
The commission before the addition
The general rule for divine wealth is: the commission before the addition, but too many people are busily pursuing the addition before they even think of the commission. But John 10:35 says, “Scriptures cannot be broken”, hence God cannot bless them while they haven’t made any conscious effort to push His Kingdom forward. If we embrace this truth which is to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, He will be more than pleased to give us “all these things”. And God’s blessing will appear in our lives as the dawn of a new day.
