How to deal with giant situations
Welcome back, my awesome Compadres!
Every Christian, one way or the other, may encounter some overwhelming giant situations and may inevitably feel helpless. Many Christians in such situations, throw in the towel and accept defeat. Such a situation could be seen as a typology of Goliath. Therefore, in this blog, I want to present to you how to deal with giant situations. Proceed with me on this adventure!
Misinformation, the enemy of courage
In 1 Samuel 17, we see the people of Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army. Then came Goliath of Gath, the captain of the Philistine army to defile the Israeli army and began to curse them. The army of Israel was scared to death because they had been misinformed with grandiose notions of Goliath’s capabilities, further exacerbated by the claim that he started fighting valiantly from his youth. Because of the daunting physique of this heavy-weight Philistine champion and the propaganda that surrounded his person, the whole army of Israel was seen bowing their heads in shame and hiding under the cover of their shields.
George Santayana said, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” History for that matter serves as a context to face the future. In dealing with giant situations in our lives, it will be prudent to glean some lessons from the story of David and Goliath. I would like to introduce you to five steps to putting every giant down.
Identify the giant
The first and foremost action to take in overcoming every giant situation is to identify it. You cannot fight an unknown enemy. One of the critical strategies the enemy uses against people is to make them believe he doesn’t exist. He then lingers in their lives with strong demonic afflictions. In 1 Samuel 17:26, David said, “…for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God”. Whereas Saul and the whole Israeli army regarded Goliath as “a valiant warrior who started fighting from his youth”, David acknowledged him as “an uncircumcised Philistine”, who was defiling the armies of the Living God. Identifying the true nature of your giant is very paramount to putting them down.
Choose your weapon
After identifying the true nature of the giant, you need to choose your weapon. Don’t let anyone choose your weapon for you and don’t use a weapon because you saw the giant use same. 1 Samuel 17:38-39 (NKJV) asserts,
“So, Saul clothed David with his armour, and he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with a coat of mail. David fastened his sword to his armor and tried to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them.” So David took them off.”
Instead of using the armour provided by the king, David decided to choose his own weapon; the one he was conversant with. 1 Samuel 17:40 says, “And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.”
More often than not, we are tempted to use the same weapon the giant is using. However, no one can beat the enemy at his game. The enemy uses slander, lies, mortal strength, finite wisdom, legalism, etc. in engaging in warfare. Moreover, 2 Corinthians 10:4 reads, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds”. Therefore, while the giant is resorting to human flesh and demonic schemes, we need to use the weapon of prayer and fasting, backed by a strong faith in the Lord.
Take the battle into the spirit
The tragedy of the Church today is that we tend to fight spiritual battles with physical weapons. We are not physical beings who occasionally have temporary supernatural experiences, we are supernatural beings having a temporary physical experience [1]. One would have thought that, considering the intimidating stature and experience of Goliath, he would simply stretch his hands to take the 17-year-old inexperienced boy David and just break his bones.
However, we are told in 1 Samuel 17:43 that, “…and the Philistine cursed David by his gods”. David, with a full understanding of the dynamics of the situation, switched the battle into the spirit. First Samuel 17:45 (NIV) reads, “then said David to the Philistine, you come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied”. Never you fight any giant in the realm of the physical, move the battle into the spirit, without taking anything for granted. Again, use the weapon of prayer and fasting, backed with strong faith in the Lord!
Stick to your weapon
David picked up five stones which stood for JESUS. He used his first stone to take Goliath down. So long as your weapon is in Jesus, you are assured of victory. If you use your first weapon and the giant doesn’t fall, use the second one. Keep on using all your spiritual weapons but make sure you don’t drift away from the Lord; make sure every weapon you use is in the Lord. Some giants may fall by just prayer, and some may fall by the combination of fasting and prayer. Jesus said in Mark 9:29 (KJV), “…this kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting”. Whichever weapon you use, make sure the goliath falls!
Finish the giant completely
We are told in 1 Samuel 17:51 (NIV) that, “David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled”. After Goliath fell, David did not leave him and say, “It is done!”; he made sure he finished him off completely! Victory is never a victory until it is a total victory. When God gives you victory over the giant, strive for total victory. The Philistines never fled until they saw David amputate the head of Goliath. Go for total victory!
Go ahead and practice these Biblical truths, and your victory will spring forth as the dawn of a new day!
